Clea DuVall and Mary Holland, who co-wrote Kristen Stewart-fronted romantic comedy feature Happiest Season, are turning their attention to the small screen for their next project.
The pair are developing single-camera comedy series Day Job with Dave producer Temple Hill and Lionsgate TV.
The half-hour series, which the pair came up with while working on Happiest Season, follows a naive woman named Meg, who will be played by Holland, who is oblivious to the fact that she has never quite fit in with her wealthy, business-savvy family. When Meg is framed by her father for a white-collar crime she is not smart enough to commit, Meg attempts to sever ties with him and the rest of her family, and vows to start a new life without any of their help. Armed with zero life experience or skills, Meg joins the workforce and quickly discovers that the road to her fresh start is not going to be as smooth as she had hoped.
DuVall, who also created Fox animated series Housebroken, will write and direct the pilot. Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, Isaac Klausner and Adam Fishbach will serve as executive producers alongside DuVall and Holland, and the project is set up at Lionsgate TV where Temple Hill has a first look television deal.
It comes after Happiest Season, which follows a woman who struggles to come out to her conservative parents at Christmas, became Hulu’s most-watched original movie to date.
DuVall is also writing, directing and exec producing IMDb TV’s High School and is filming Showtime’s The First Lady. Holland just wrapped Senior Year, which she stars in alongside Rebel Wilson, for Netflix, and will also star in the streamer’s The Woman In The House opposite Kristen Bell.
DuVall is repped by UTA and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis and Holland is repped by ICM Partners, Atlas Artists and Ziffren Brittenham.
Fox has renewed animated comedy Housebroken, about pets and stray animals in the neighborhood, working out issues inside and outside their therapy group, for season two. Lisa Kudrow, Clea DuVall, Nat Faxon, Will Forte and Tony Hale are in the voice cast.
Gabrielle Allen, Jennifer Crittenden and Clea DuVall created the show.
“Housebroken has quickly established itself as an important part of Animation Domination,” said Michael Thorn, president, entertainment, Fox Entertainment. “In fact, the only animals funnier than our own pets are the members of Housebroken’s incredibly talented cast. Gabrielle, Jennifer and Clea have delivered big comedy and surprising characters, using this wonderful group of animals to make fun of the neuroses in all of us. Bento, Kapital and Fox look forward to many more hilarious episodes featuring this amazing ensemble.”
Housebroken is produced by Kapital Entertainment and Fox Entertainment. Allan, Crittenden and DuVall executive produce with Horgan, Clelia Mountford, Aaron Kaplan and Dana Honor.
The series is animated by Bento Box Entertainment.
Clea DuVall (Veep) and Charlie Plummer (All the Money in the World) are set for key recurring roles in Showtime’s upcoming anthology series The First Lady, starring Viola Davis — who also executive produces — Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson. Cathy Schulman serves as showrunner. Susanne Bier (The Undoing) will direct and executive produce.
Created by Aaron Cooley and produced by Lionsgate TV and Showtime, The First Lady is a revelatory reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the women at the heart of the White House. Season 1 focuses on Eleanor Roosevelt (Anderson), Betty Ford (Pfeiffer) and Michelle Obama (Davis).
DuVall will play Malvina “Tommy” Thompson: Eleanor Roosevelt’s trusted assistant, secretary, traveling companion, gatekeeper and dear friend. Irreverent, funny, and a shrewd judge of character, Tommy was utterly devoted to Eleanor and together they trailblazed women’s advocacy, taking no prisoners as they went.
Plummer will play young Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Born into a famously patrician American family, Franklin quickly shed all that in the New York Senate for a life of service to his country. He married Eleanor in 1905, and though he was stricken by polio in 1921, his youthful resilience and vitality predicted great political success.
Series also stars Kiefer Sutherland as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Aaron Eckhart as President Gerald Ford, O-T Fagbenle as President Barack Obama and Dakota Fanning as Susan Elizabeth Ford.
Produced by Showtime and Lionsgate Television, The First Lady is executive produced by Schulman, Davis, Julius Tennon, Andrew Wang, Bier, Jeff Gaspin and Brad Kaplan. Cooley will write several of the episodes and executive produce.
DuVall, known for her on-camera roles in Veep, The Handmaid’s Tale and Argo among others, co-created, executive produces and voices Elsa in the Fox animated comedy series Housebroken. She recently directed and co-wrote the holiday comedy Happiest Season. She also is the co-creator and executive producer of the upcoming IMDb TV series High School. She will write and direct multiple episodes of the show as well. DuVall is repped by UTA and attorney Lev Ginsburg.
Plummer earned a Marcello Mastroianni Award and a British Independent Film Awards nomination for his performance in 2017’s Lean on Pete. His other film and TV credits include Granite Flats, All the Money in the World, Looking for Alaska, among others. Most recently, he starred in Spontaneous and Words on Bathroom Walls, and he will be seen next year in Moonfall. Plummer is repped by Luber Roklin Entertainment, Zoom Talent Management, CAA and Peikoff Mahan Law Office.
